Giving Back for the Holidays

It’s that time of year again, the holiday season. It’s a time to be thankful for what we have and to give what we can to those in need.

This giving spirit is exactly what the Green Team hopes to inspire in the staff of the Faculty of Continuing Education each holiday season. And this year was no different. Three major events that encouraged reusing, re-purposing and giving to the less fortunate took place during the lead-up to the holidays.

The first event was a Hats, Coats and Mitts Blitz. Gently used outerwear was collected and delivered to the Calgary Drop-in & Rehab Centre for the homeless. We are extremely proud of the amount of outwear our Faculty was able to donate.

The second event was a Christmas Freecycle – a recycling of once-loved holiday decor. Staff members brought in ornaments or holiday-themed items they no longer wanted or used so other staff members could pick them up and give them a new life. The leftover items were donated to the Women in Need Society.

Last, but certainly not least, we held our second annual Socks for a Cause Competition. This event had Faculty departments vying against one another to see which area could donate the largest number of new pairs of socks. We were floored by the support and thrilled to donate 1,729 pairs of socks to Inn from the Cold, Calgary’s emergency family shelter, who informed us that they had just run out of socks. This year’s total surpassed last year’s by 365 pairs of socks. The Arts, Science and Tech department took home the trophy for the second year in a row.

The Green Team would like to thank all of the staff for supporting these events. We are privileged to work with such great people and be able give to those who need it the most.

Happy Holidays!
