Returning the Favor by Sayuri Serediak, MRU 4th year Nursing Student

“Oh no, another project! What should I do?” I needed to conduct a leadership project in order to complete the nursing program. The NURS 5514 course coordinators had offered a number of projects for students to take part in. Although it might have been easier to pick up one of the existing projects, I chose instead to conduct a project related to the EAL program, because I wanted to give back what I have received from the EAL support program.

When I fist started studying at MRU, I was not sure if I would survive the Nursing program. This program is known for being demanding. We had numerous assignments in every semester and I have cried many times over difficult assignments, especially with writing. I remember when I first found the information about the EAL program, I was a little skeptical about it, because, knowing how busy nursing students and faculty can be, I was doubtful there would be anyone actually committed to offer their time and effort to help others.

However, because I noticed writing tutorials was on the list, I did go to a meeting . As a result, I received a few one-on-one writing tutorials from one of the volunteer faculties with very detailed and thorough explanations. And the best part of going to the meeting was that I found a lifelong friend! If the EAL support group did not exist, I would not have met my friend, who was a very committed volunteer of the program.

Through working on the breeze presentation for EAL students, I realized how much I have accomplished within the past four years. It was not an easy route, but definitely worth going through.  I have established some practical techniques for writing papers and exams, as well as overcoming cultural differences. In sharing my thoughts and techniques with other EAL students, I would like to provide the same support to my fellow peers that I have received from the EAL support program.

Lastly, I would like to thank Liza Choi for starting this priceless support system on our MRU campus.
