What to do when you’re thinking about withdrawing from a course.

March 11th, 2010

The deadline to Withdraw from winter semester courses is approaching this April 1. Withdrawing from a course will leave a “W” on your transcript, but this does not impact your Grade Point Average (GPA).

Usually when you ask an Advisor if you should withdraw from a course we will ask:

  • Have you spoken with your professor to see if there’s still a chance to be succesful with the course? Some situations merit extensions, I grades, or Withdraws with Cause.
  • Are you going to impact your funding if you become Part Time as a result of withdrawing from a course? Questions about funding can often be answered by Student Awards & Financial Aid, E102.
  • Is the course an admission requirement for a program you have applied for (and have received conditional admission?) – if so, it’s likely more important to stay in the course. Please ask your Advisor and speak with your Professor.

Here’s the official information from the main MtRoyal.ca website:

Withdrawal from a Course

If you wish to stop attending a class after the last date to drop a course or cancel your registration, you must complete a Course or Complete Withdrawal Request Form on or before the last day to withdraw.

If you withdraw from a class you will receive a “W” grade. “W” grades are not included in the calculation of your grade point average (GPA).

If you do not officially withdraw from course(s) that you have stopped attending, you will receive an “F” grade for those courses. “F” grades are included in the calculation of your GPA and could have a serious impact on your academic status at Mount Royal.

Students are encouraged to consult with their instructor and/or academic advisor before making a decision to withdraw from a course.

Students who withdraw from a course or the University will NOT receive a fee refund.

Students are encouraged to check with the Student Awards and Financial Aid office if you currently have a student loan or have had a confirmation of enrolment form to make sure you are aware of the implications of withdrawing from the course.

Withdrawal with Cause
You may request approval for a course or complete withdrawal after the withdrawal deadline based on the following reasons:

  1. Serious illness, verified by a physician’s letter; or;
  2. Severe emotional distress, verified in writing from Student Counselling Services or other registered mental health care professional.

You must complete a Request for Late Withdrawal Form from the Registrar’s Office and return it with supporting documentation to the Registrar’s Office on or before the last day of classes. If you follow the proper procedure, you will receive a “Withdrawal with Cause” (WC) on your permanent academic record for all withdrawn courses.

Please consult the University Calendar for additional details regarding withdrawal from courses or complete withdrawal from the University.
