Advisors’ note: This is something that should be attractive to English majors, writing specialists from any discipline, and those who are pursuing Honours programs or graduate work. A chance to get published and start your professional portfolio.
CURRENT READINGS—READING CURRENTS
As part of its centennial celebrations during 2010‐2011, Mount Royal University will begin to house an online,
peer‐reviewed database of essays to offer a publication forum for intellectual discussion for Canadian writers. The Mount Royal Centennial Reader straddles both worlds: the academic world and the popular publication world. Submissions should therefore apply intellectual thought to topical concerns, offered in an entertaining and popular way.
Submissions can use academic research, but must be written to reach a thoughtful, popular audience. Articles should not be written to an academic audience, as a result of academic research; neither are the submissions to be newspaper articles.
All submissions will be subject to an interdisciplinary peer‐review process. Criteria for evaluation will include:
- Quality of insight
- Quality of research
- Quality of writing
- Reader engagement and appeal
We invite submissions for the inaugural issue of the Mount Royal Centennial Reader which will appear in electronic publication format in January 2011. Essays can be on any topic of interest to an informed, Canadian audience.
For this first issue, submissions will be chosen from past and present students, staff, and faculty of Mount Royal only. All writers are encouraged to use the number “100” in the essay body.
We will accept submissions in two categories:
- Longer essay submissions: For longer‐essay submissions, contributions should be between 2000 and
4000 words.
- Short‐essay submissions: contributions should be 1000 to 2000 words long.
Any and all inquiries are welcome; please address them to Professor Bill Bunn, Chief Editor of the Mount Royal Centennial Reader at inquiries@thecentennial.ca.
Completed manuscripts should be submitted electronically, as MS Word attachments, by August 19, 2010 to submissions@thecentennial.ca .

The first fee deadline is for everything you’ve registered for thus far. It’s kind of an early registration fee deadline.
Not paying all of your fees and tuition by this deadline can result in a fine, and you’ll also get dropped from your registration. Once you pay your $50 fine you can then attempt to register again – warning though, your old classes may have already filled!
If you have student loans or some funding that will take care of this, please make sure Student Awards knows ahead of time. They can usually make a note in your file so that the system doesn’t drop you from your courses – you need to let us know to wait for the funding, so please call now! (403.440.6223)

Waitlisting is a popular registration strategy and is an early registration perk. August 13th will be the last day you can add yourself to a waitlist. The week after that, all waitlists are cleared. So, if there isn’t room in the course by then, you’ll need to find a course with open room instead.
The first day of the semester is officially September 7th. New Student Orientation takes place September 7-8, and faculty are all buzzing around campus. Make sure you have your parking pass displayed as enforcement doesn’t take a break!

Parking passes are limited in supply, so it’s always good to be prepared for the first day to purchase them. Here’s what you need to know:
Key dates:
Until June 30 at 4 p.m. 2009-2010 annual permit holders can renew their annual permits.
Starting July 5 at 8 a.m. Credit students and employees can purchase available 2010-2011 annual and Fall semester permits.
Starting Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. Non-credit students and employees can purchase available 2010-2011 annual and Fall semester permits.
Buy your permit at the Parking Office (EA1016) or online through MyMRU or the Parking Office website.
Permit prices are the same as last year and, once again, we expect that permits — especially annual permits — will sell quickly.
Visit the Parking Office website for details on permit options and rates, a parking lot map and parking FAQs, plus information on alternative options to parking including the U-Pass and C-Choices.
If you have questions, please visit the Parking Office (EA1016) or e-mail parking@mtroyal.ca.

How’s the first week of class been?
You still have until May 14th to add/drop/cancel your registration for the Spring Semester. This means you can technically join a class up until then, but do note that the semester is more condensed. Please meet with your Professor to discuss what you’ll need to do to catch up.
Did you add any classes after the first fee deadline?
Then the second one is for you. Please ensure all of your tuition and fees are paid, or you will be dropped from your courses. You’ll need to pay a reinstatement fee of $50 to re-register (and there’s no guarantee you’ll get the same spot!). Check out the section of the MRU website that talks about Paying Tuition and Fees for more details.

Are you ready to come back to class?
Here’s some tidbits to help you feel prepared:
- Waitlisting has ended for Spring registration… courses are now ‘first come first served’, so keep logging into MyMRU to look for changes. People are adding & dropping courses all the time!
- The first fee deadline is April 26th. This will apply to ALL courses you have registered for. If you register for any classes after April 26, the fees for those added courses will be due May 17th.
- Need to switch a course? You’ll have right until May 14th to do so, using MyMRU. Refunds are still processed until this date. If you drop a class after May 14th you forfeit tuition & fees.
- June 7 will be the last day you can withdraw from a course with a “W” grade assigned to your transcript.
- Exams will be booked by your Prof. The two days all exams will run over are June 21 & 22.

Each mark counts. It can take some time to learn how to be a professional student. This guide is here to assist you in that transition.
Why do my marks matter? To move from one program to the next requires an application. Each application is ranked against other applicants, often based on marks more than anything else. Plus, Mount Royal cares that you have a 2.00 average (out of 4.00) or higher, so that we know you’re meeting our definition of good academic standing.
Not Too Bad – I earned some C’s and B’s
Pretty Good – I have some B’s and A’s
It Could Have Been Better – I got some F’s and D’s
