Can You Compare MRU Electrical Consumption To An Average Home?
If you assume an average sized house in 2,000 square feet then Mount Royal is equivalent to 1,252 homes. Now consider that Mount Royal University uses 25,277,769 kilowatts of electricity every year and that an average home uses 7,200 kilowatts.
That means MRU uses as much electricity as 3,511 homes. In other words, we use 2.8 times more electricity than an average house on a per square foot basis.
Who Is Bigger? MRU or the Empire State Building
When the new Conservatory and Library are complete Mount Royal University will be 345,307 square feet larger than the Empire State Building in New York City.
Snow Removal from the Parkade (November 9, 2014)
“The snow on November 9th deposited 10 to 15 centimeters of snow on the parkade roof. Grounds staff used a Bobcat to pile the snow prior to using our new Superchute ‘snow chute’ to push the snow into a waiting a tandem truck. Approximately 25 trucks were filled over the course of three and half hours of work. The snow chute which is new this year saved around 20 person hours of labour in its first use. The snow is not taken offsite. It is piled behind the Grounds Building or on what is commonly known as Woods Lake which is part of the 100 year flood plan situated on the MRU Campus.”
That’s a lot of snow and working on top of the parkade is made more difficult in that it is completely exposed to the elements. Hats off to the Grounds crew! For more information on Superchute products – please visit – http://www.superchute.com/new/Chutes/snowchute.html

Empty Single Use Coffee Cups
Yesterday I undertook the glamourous task of looking at garbage cans in public spaces throughout MRU. My assessment wasn’t scientific or completely comprehensive but I learned one thing. Single use coffee cups and paper food containers are a significant issue and a major contributor to our waste profile. These pictures were taken around 9:30 AM. By the end of the day more than 300 bins like this will be full to overflowing.
The widespread use of re-usable coffee mugs would make a tremendous difference!!
Behind the Walls
A Small Step In the Direction of Restoring the Grounds
Physical Resources negotiated a great end-of-season deal on some trees. We will be planting 22 Green Ash, 10 Swedish Aspen, 4 Maydays, and 4 Hawthorne in various locations across the campus before the snow falls. During the winter we are going to refresh the grounds masterplan and develop specific planting strategies for three of the hardest hit areas:
The Memorial Garden (7 trees lost)
The Art’s (T-Wing) Courtyard (13 trees lost)
Health (U-Wing) Courtyard (9 trees lost)
Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome for any of the areas on campus. As an aside, there are 78 acres of space to plan and care for and around 18 kilometers of pathways weaving through a campus describes by the Huffington Post (before the snowstorm) as one of the most beautiful university campuses in Canada.
