MRU Library Celebrates Open Access Week

Open Access week is a global event that promotes open sharing and free online access to scholarly research. MRU Library is pleased to present the following speaker series that aims to discuss current issues relating to open access, publishing platforms and open education strategies. Be prepared to engage in a discussion that is relevant to all researchers (students, staff, faculty, administrators). Everyone is welcome to attend.

Kill the academic journal? Sorry and please! Gerald Beasley, Vice Provost and Chief Librarian (UofA)

Date/time: Monday October 19th 11-12pm
Location : T107

Description: 2015 is the 350th anniversary of the birth of the academic journal: the “Journal des scavans” in France and the Royal Society of London’s “Philosophical Transactions” both began publishing in 1665. This is as good a time as any to celebrate the enormous positive contribution made by the academic journal to scholarly communications – but also to debate whether its continued hegemony is serving the world at all well in an open access environment.

Beasley is currently Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian at the University of Alberta. He formerly served as University Librarian at Concordia University, where he co-chaired the Open Access Working Group that successfully proposed a Resolution on Open Access to the Senate in 2010. Beasley has an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Oxford University and an M.A. in Library Studies from University College, London.
