ADHD in Post-Secondary

Using Technology

Because technology such as telephones and computers can create many distractions with notification pings and easy access to entertaining and absorbing apps, finding ways that technology can help rather than hinder is often very important for students.

There are APPs for example, that block access to certain internet sites for a period of time, so that when attention goes off-task, it can’t fall into a person’s go-to-distraction (where an hour goes by in the blink of an eye). Some students silence their phones and notifications or put their phones out of easy reach during a time when focused attention is required. Some students find that using a treadmill or stationary bicycle while reading helps to focus their attention (there are some in the MRU library).

Disability Credit Canada offers an article on APPs that may be helpful for ADHD. (A bit of an editorial comment: some of the language of this site…e.g., those who suffer with ADHD…may not sit well with some but may describe it just right for others).
