Interesting paper on print vs online news and reader recall.

Found a reference to this article in a library journal. This study “Medium Matters: Newsreaders’ Recall and Engagement with Online and Print Newspapers“, by Arthur D. Santana, Randall Livingstone and Yoon Cho presents information on a study of differences between reading news online or in print. Apart from anything else, it has an extensive enough literature review to warm the cockles of this librarians heart.

New search tools
So the tools I built last year using Rollyo.com stopped working. I have rebuilt them in Google Custom Search. Try them out – will be editing the communications subject guides accordingly over next few days. One thing to remember – as Rollyo was restricted to 25 sites, not all Canadian University and College sites are included – yet – I focused on ones with strong communications programs. Will add more universities and colleges as I have time. Have prominently indicated MRU Library’s involvement as I need to demonstrate to Google that we fit in the non-profit/educational sector so we don’t need to show ads.

Major report on digital news
Hi – came across this while looking for something else: The Story So Far: What We Know About the Business of Digital Journalism, a report out of the Columbia Journalism Review by Bill Grueskin, Ava Seave, and Lucas Graves. Although they acknowledge that “digital journalism is such a dynamic field that some of the findings and conclusions we reach in May 2011 will be outdated within months.”, it still provides a current state of play for changing business models in journalism.

21st century journalism and the fate of the article
Thanks to Paul Coates who alerted me to a June 20 Jian Ghomeshi interview with Jeff Jarvis, a journalism prof behind the Buzzmachine blog. His latest few pieces muse on the fact that not all news deserves an article – articles in fact should be saved where the effort of the journalist is best placed – providing context and investigation for the important stories. These are not necessarily the ones about earth-shattering events, more often they are the stories of life and people outside the celebrity spotlight. An interesting man with cool ideas.
