Calgary Peace Prize 2020

Calgary Peace Prize

Under the patronage of Her Honour, the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Calgary Peace Prize recognizes outstanding individuals from the global community who work towards making the world a more just, safer and less violent place.

2020 Recipient

Mount Royal University will recognize journalist and author Stephanie Nolen for her exemplary courage and leadership through journalism on the world stage. Her vast body of work has given voice to victims of violence and has informed and engaged Canadians on some of the most pressing humanitarian issues of our time, including gender equality and environmental justice.

Words of Acceptance

At the end of March 2020, due to COVID-19, we regretfully informed you we would cancel this year’s Calgary Peace Prize VIP Reception and Award Ceremony.

In place of a public presentation, Stephanie shares these words with our community:

I am honoured to be the recipient of the 2020 Calgary Peace Prize. I have reported on many wars and public security crises globally; in addition to the straight news, I have worked to probe causes and identify possible solutions. But I have also tried to focus on stories of economic inequality, social exclusion, and the denial of human rights. The violence in these stories is profound and brutal, but often much harder to see. And so I appreciate the committee’s framing of peace as more than just the absence of overt conflict. I’m grateful to the people who have trusted me with their stories, and those who have helped me to tell them, and I’m grateful to Mount Royal University for this recognition.
