Calgary Elementary School Mathematics Contest (CESMC) is a mathematical
contest organized annually by the Department of Mathematics and Computing,
Mount Royal University. We are pleased to invite you to enter your students in the Twelfth
annual contest scheduled to take place on Wednesday April 24, 2024 for this year.
The contest is open to students in grades 4, 5, and 6 attending elementary schools in
Calgary and surrounding areas. There is no registration fee for the contest. For a
student to participate in the contest, registration must come through the school that
the student is attending. Registrations made by any other organizations/parties, e.g.
private tutoring center etcetera, are not acceptable. The contest will be written by
participants at their own school under the supervision of their school teacher.
The contests are divided into two levels: Level 1 and Level 2. Grade 6 students write the Level-2 contest. The Level 1 contest is intended for students in grades 4 and 5. However, if any of grade 4 or 5 students would like to challenge themselves, they are most welcome to write a Level 2 contest. Levels for students should be declared in the registration forms. Once a level of interest is chosen, switching between the levels is not allowed.
The contest is 50 minutes long and consists of 20 questions ranging from easy (Part
A) to more challenging ones (Part C). All questions are in multiple-choice format. For each question, 4 possible answers will be provided, with only one of them being the correct answer. Students are required to select the correct answer.
It is important to know that this is not an examination. There is no passing or failing grade. The goal of the contest is to try to develop students’ interest in mathematics by encouraging their participation in mathematical activities. We hope that every participating student enjoys and benefits from this experience. To encourage participation, we provide some recognition to some of the high scorers, individually and as a group, in the form of medals, certificates, and trophies.
