Bissett School of Business General Management students compete in Canada’s Business Model Competition

Zachary Hartley

A team of 4th. year,  General Management, BBA students were a “BBQ Rib” away from entering the Finals of Canada’s Business Model Canvas Competition (CBMC), held March 4-5th. at Dalhousie University.

Founder Zachary Hartley of  “Smoke Barrel” and his teammate, Andrew Conway, were Semi-Finalists in this annual, national student competition. Over 45 student teams, ranging in backgrounds from Bachelor programs to PhD programs,  competed for $50,000 in cash and prizes. Zac’s “Smoke Barrel”, a premium BBQ smoker, made from old wine and whisky barrels, has been launched and is already garnering consumer sales.
In the CBMC, Zac and Andrew earned a tie in their flight with a team of Master of Technology Entrepreneurship & Innovation from SMU of Halifax. However, the judges awarded the seat in the Finals to SMU on the “tie-breaking” social impact criteria.
This year’s winning business concept, an innovative allergy-testing product, was founded by PhD students from the University of Waterloo.
Douglas MacDonald, team coach, can attest that Zac and Andrew were noble ambassadors of the Bissett School of Business and garnered respect for their presentation, competitive and supportive spirit in addition to their business concept.
Canada’s Business Model Competition ® (CBMC) represents an innovative and alternative paradigm for post-secondary students to demonstrate their innovativeness and entrepreneurship. The CBMC uses the philosophy and approach of Alex Osterwalder’s ‘Business Model Canvas’ plus integrating Steve Blanks’ ‘The Lean Start-up Movement’. These tools use an approach driven by a question, hypothesis, and validation process to create innovative business models that solve real problems. Leading-edge universities such as Stanford, Harvard, BYU, Waterloo, UBC and Dalhousie in addition to innovative global companies have used these models. Over the past five years, our Entrepreneurship Program has also integrated these models into our curriculum. — Douglas MacDonald
Dalhousie’s 4th. Annual Competition is the Canadian qualifier for the International BMC, which will be held this April at Microsoft Campus, Redmond, Washington.
Team Coach, Douglas MacDonald,  would like to acknowledge Ray DePaul for his mentorship of Zac and Andrew as well as the entire entrepreneurship team for fostering this type of entrepreneurial attitude and behavior
.
The Bissett School of Business would like to congratulate Zak and Andrew on their efforts as well as acknowledge the dedication of their coach, Douglas MacDonald and the Department of Entrepreneurship for continuing to mentor and inspire the entrepreneurial spirit of our students.

Bissett School of Business Associate Professor, David Finch and undergraduate student, Mackenzie Strong, published in AMLE

The Bissett School of Business would like to congratulate, Associate Professor, David Finch and student, Mackenzie Strong on being published in the Academy of Management Learning + Education Journal:

Institutional Biography and Knowledge Dissemination: An Analysis of Canadian Business School Faculty (February 12, 2016 David Finch, Norm O’Reilly, David Deephouse, William Fister, Loren Falkenberg, Mackenzie Strong)

Abstract

“A biographical analysis of 740 faculty members from 13 elite and non-elite Canadian business schools suggests that different knowledge dissemination activities are anchored in a faculty member’s scholar’s socialization and are influenced by both individual and contextual factors. Results suggest that the divide between academics and practitioners in business schools can be bridged with individual faculty members who possess both academic and professional qualifications.”

This project is an outocme of the Business School Research Network (BRSN) initiative. The BSRN was established in 2014 through start-up funding from MRU’s Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship with the goal of conducting research to enhance business school performance through evidence-based management. The BSRN now has ten active projects underway including over 20 researchers from 15 different business schools.
David notes: “Though this is the fifth publication of the BSRN, what Ray and I are most proud of is that one of our own MRU students, Mackenzie Strong, is a co-author. This project emerged from Mackenzie’s directed reading project two years ago. Mackenzie did ALL the heavy lifting on the data collection during her project and had the patience to work through the process. It was a joy to have her on our team and for to publish in an Academy journal as an undergraduate student (I suspect this may be the first time an undergraduate student has ever published in AMLE). I hope this level of achievement inspires all of our students to engage in collaborative research with our faculty”.

From left to right: Krishna Gandi, Suncor Energy; Sara Burton, Richardt Malan, first place winners; Simon Magennis, Accounting faculty MRU; Paula Overguard, ARC Resources.

The BASS Financial Case Competition was held on Friday, November 20, 2015 with eight teams of two students competing for a total of $2000 in prize money. Aspiring accountants use the competition to display their developing knowledge and apply it to real life situations. This allows the students to use their analytical skills, test their critical thinking, time management and strategic skills in a challenging circumstance. Being judged by industry professionals as well as our own  Bissett faculty members, gives added credibility to the competition.

Rik Smistad, the Chair of Accounting and Finance, explains the case scenario:  “This year, the business case students presented on, involved a company that was a sole distributor for energy supplements, popular with athletes, as they contain no banned substances.  The company was looking for additional bank funding to continue expansion and the bank has asked the company for additional financial information.  A senior manager with little training in accounting drafted financial statements for the bank but they contained errors that put the company in a bad financial light. The case competitors were required to adjust the errors thereby generating correct and useful financial information.  Further, the winning cases went beyond the adjustments and considered financial ratios and analysis to support the company’s case for its ability to manage cash flow, and stay within bank required, current ratio requirements and minimum cash balances.”
