Cryptomining causes University network shut down – 11/19/18

Earlier this month, St. Francis Xavier University discovered their network was being used to mine cryptocurrency.  As a result, the University was forced to temporarily shut down its whole network.  Every system was affected including, WiFi, their LMS, payment card systems and Banner.  Although most systems are now up and running, they are still some in the recovery process. Fortunately, it appears as though no data was compromised or stolen.  However the University did reset all passwords as a caution.

It is not yet known how the cryptomining malware found it’s way onto the network or who is responsible.
